Maximilian and Agathe Weishaupt began building their collection in the mid-1980s through close personal contact with artists and gallery owners. Today, the collection comprises numerous high-calibre works of international contemporary art and has, until now, rarely been shown in public. A defining feature of the collection is the couple’s enthusiasm for forms of artistic expression characterised by a tendency towards minimalism.
The exhibition at the Kunstmuseum Ahlen was developed in close collaboration with Agathe Weishaupt, who has continued to oversee the collection following her husband’s death in 2018. Thematic rooms – such as those exploring the manifestations of light, the art of the 1950s and 1960s, or the principle of folding – alternated with rooms dedicated to individual artists, including Camill Leberer and David Nash. New discoveries, such as the meditative and austere works of Korean artists, were juxtaposed with stars of the international art scene such as Sean Scully and Sol LeWitt. Several works by Maximilian Weishaupt were also on display for the first time.
