Beat Zoderer

Faltungen und andere Ereignisse

20/06/21–12/09/21

In the context of Hellweg-Konkret II, the Kunstmuseum Ahlen presented an exhibition of works by the Swiss artist Beat Zoderer. Beat Zoderer (*1955) is an outstanding representative of neo-constructivist art who constantly rethinks the approaches of the so-called “Concretists”. The interesting theme of folding, which plays a central role in the history of Concrete Art, accompanies his work in a special way. Based on a strict geometric vocabulary of forms, folding leads to obviously less rule-compliant designs and allows an effortless escape from the surface into space. From the perspective of folding, the entire spectrum of Zoderer's work becomes apparent. Beat Zoderer is an artist who playfully follows the rules of constructive-concrete art to the extent that he humorously undermines its strict principles and familiar appearance. Both the use of the most banal everyday materials, such as adhesive labels, rubber bands, scraps of wood or foam, and the potentiation of simple creative processes, from which folded and bent pictures or “twisted” sculptures are created, lead to a new, unusual dimension of concrete art. Beat Zoderer has created a current installation in the large entrance room of the museum, made especially for the exhibition.
